We Are The Osprey Family by HH Photography of Florida
High in the top of a Norfolk Island Pine tree on a sunny, cloudless, late spring afternoon, sits the incredible nest of the Osprey (Pandion haliateus) with Momma Osprey and her three fledglings. Mom (second from the right) is flanked on the far left and right by her two beautiful daughters. She’s in the process of feeding her only son who sits next to her in the nest. Male Osprey, whether full grown or juveniles, are inherently smaller in stature than the female which is evident in this young family photograph.
The Osprey usually begin building their nests in January here on the Florida Gulf coast and lay 2 to 4 eggs in one to two day intervals in February. The eggs will incubate for approximately 4 to 6 weeks and begin hatching in the order they were laid. At 7 to 8 weeks of age and after many days of hovering over the nest and “practicing” flying, the young birds will take their first solo flight. Once the art of flying is perfected, the young ones will begin accompanying Daddy Osprey on fishing trips. Osprey parents are very attentive and very protective of their babes and it’s an incredible privilege for me to watch many of these pairs each year as they raise their beautiful families.
