Description
Birds - Deadly Weapons by HH Photography of Florida.
A close up look at the business end of an Osprey (Pandion haliaetus.) Their unique and awesome talons are what makes them one of the best fishermen in the birding world. The toes of an Osprey are of equal length and are unique in that they have a reversible outer toe that allows them to grasp their prey with 2 toes forward and two toes back. The pads (tarsi) of the feet are also barbed (reticulate) for additional grasping power. After catching an unsuspecting fish, they line up their prey with the head pointing into the wind so there is less wind resistance when flying. Photographed on the Florida west coast.
