Description
In Memoriam To Snooty 7-23-17 Sea Cow And Calf by HH Photography of Florida. Fine Art photography for the home or office.
EDIT: This photo is dedicated to Snooty, a gentle giant, who died today, 7/23/17, in a tragic accident in his pool at the South Florida Museum in Bradenton, Florida. This was two days after he celebrated his 69th birthday. Snoots was one of the first manatees born in captivity, was in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest living manatee in captivity and is purportedly the oldest known manatee in the world.
I grew up with this beloved animal and was lucky enough to visit him, first as a very young girl with my parents and many times throughout my adult life as well. All of the Bradenton community is heartbroken today. Rest in peace Snooty. You will be forever in our hearts. Read more about Snooty below which was written many months ago.
This bronze sculpture by E. Dwight Conley, of a manatee (Sea Cow) Mom and her calf, is on display at Riverwalk on the downtown Bradenton, Florida waterfront. Just a short walk away is the South Florida Museum, where you will find our long-lived resident Manatee named Snooty (the official county mascot) who is 67 years old and has been at the museum since he was 11 months old. Snooty came to the Bradenton area in June of 1949 at the age of 11 months. He was officially named the county mascot in 1979.
The manatee is a revered mammal in this county having the county itself (Manatee County) a river (the Manatee River) a major thoroughfare (Manatee Avenue) many restaurants, RV parks, campgrounds, hotel/motels named after it. If ever in the Bradenton area, stop by and visit Snooty's other 2 pool mates, Sarasolo and Icecube who were both rescued and are being rehabilitated until such time that they can be released back into the wild. The Parker Manatee Aquarium at the South Florida Museum has helped in the rehabilitation of 30 manatees since 1998.

Thank you for posting this as a memorial to "Snooty". We both arrived in this world in 1948 and "Snooty" was a required visit each year when the family would return to Bradenton. "Snooty" will be missed by the many generations of visitors that revered this gentle creature.
HH Photography of Florida replied:
So glad you got to visit with Snooty, Terry. I feel sorry for the generations that will never know this beloved, gentle creature.
