Description
American Oystercatcher by HH Photography of Florida.
A lone American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus) standing by the water’s edge in the warm light of a late afternoon. This beautiful shorebird with its bright orange/red beak and yellow eye is a year round resident of Florida but not one I encounter frequently so I was thrilled to spot this one on a recent trip to the shores of Tampa Bay. The Oystercatcher is aptly named because it feeds mostly on bivalves such as oysters, mussels and clams and uses its beak to pry the shells apart but worms, fish and crabs also make up a part of their diet.
