Description
Armadillo Foraging BW by HH Photography of Florida.
Spotted this little Nine-banded Armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) foraging in the grass along a rural country road in west central Florida, late one cool winter afternoon. Armadillo literally means “little armored one” in Spanish and is so named because of their leathery, rigid outer shells. The Nine-banded Armadillo are mostly nocturnal animals and can currently be found from Texas east to the Atlantic and from Kansas south to the Gulf coast but can appear outside of this range which is ever expanding. Their diet consists mainly of ants, grubs, worms, beetles and termites. Shown here in black and white, this image is also available with artistic effects applied. See Foraging Armadillo BW.

Great in black and white, Helen, you can really see how intricate the patterns are on his shell! Excellent capture! fav

Thanks much, Kathi. Yes, they're interesting little critters with amazing patterned and textured outer shells.
