Description
Wash And Dry by HH Photography of Florida
A beautiful Anhinga drying it's wings in the warm, late afternoon Florida sun. The Anhinga is also called Snakebird, American Darter, Water Turkey and Darter. The origin of the word anhinga comes from the Brazilian Tupi language and means devil bird or snake bird.
The feathers of the Anhinga are not waterproof as they lack the uropygial gland that most birds use to oil their feathers and waterproof them. This lack of waterproofing allows them to dive easily and stay underwater for extended periods of time. They can often be seen with wings spread, drying their feathers so they can eventually fly again.
The Anhinga is protected in the United States by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. They are considered of least concern because of their great numbers throughout the world.
