Description
Turtle Nesting Time by HH Photography of Florida.
As the sun sets on the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida west coast, areas up and down the beach have been marked with red or pink flagging tape, indicating spots where sea turtles have crawled ashore and laid their eggs. The Gulf is home to 5 of the world's 7 species of sea turtles (the Loggerhead, GreenTurtle, Kemp'sRidley, Hawksbill and the Leatherback.)
Volunteer turtle watch groups from the local areas patrol the beaches daily/weekly from April to October, keeping watch over these precious birthing grounds, checking for any signs of trouble or of the upcoming hatching. By October, all of the hatchlings have made their way into the Gulf waters.
As of August 9, 2014, the tally for this breeding season in the 35 mile stretch of coastline from Venice, FL, northward to Bradenton, has reached 2,376 Loggerhead nests, 7 Green Turtle nests and 2 Kemp's Ridley nests. The Kemp's Ridley sea turtle is the rarest of all sea turtles inhabiting our worldwide oceans.
