A mature adult Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) sitting atop a piling and taking a rest before beginning his search for morning breakfast. A beautiful shorebird seen throughout the southern and western coastal shorelines. In the early 1970's, the Brown Pelican was placed on the Endangered Species list due to DDT contamination of their eggs that led to a dwindling of the species. They have made a comeback since 1978 when the Endangered Species Act was signed into law. Photographed on the Florida Gulf coast. Textures applied for an artistic presentation.
