A female Spiny Orb-weaver spider (Gasteracantha cancriformis) is seen in the center of her elaborate garden web. Also known as the spiny-backed orb weaver, crab spider and smiley face spider, to name a few, this little arachnid has a hard, crab-shaped abdomen which is colored white, orange or yellow with red or black markings. In the female, the abdomen is ringed with 6 red or orange, spike-shaped projections and in the male, only 4 or 5 dark, stubby knobs are present. The Spiny Orb-weaver bite poses no threat to humans. Photographed in west central Florida and presented in black and white. A color version is also available. See Garden Condo.
