Description
Texas Highway Wildflowers by HH Photography of Florida.
When President Lyndon B. Johnson was in office, his wife, most commonly known as “Lady Bird” Johnson, lobbied Congress for the beautification of the nation’s highways. Through her efforts, the Beautification Act of 1965, aka “Lady Bird’s Bill,” limited the amount of signage that could be erected along the interstate highways. She wanted to beautiful not only Texas highways but the country’s. She worked with the Governor and the Texas Department of Transportation to beautify Texas roadsides. The Texas DOT has been protecting the wildflower bloom since 1934 by prohibiting mowing of roadsides until after the spring/summer bloom. Thank you Lady Bird.
