Opening in 1970, the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall (pronounced Van Way-zull) located on the bayfront near downtown Sarasota, Florida, is a performing arts venue that has featured performances from world class entertainers for almost 50 years. The unique, one of a kind design of this purple and lavender building by architect William Wesley Peters of the Taliesin Associated Architects was inspired by nature. The seashell shaped roof can be seen from the west, bay side of the building and is a stand-out in the downtown landscape. The Taliesin architectural group was founded by Frank Lloyd Wright and it was FLW’s widow who suggested the color scheme for the building. This view of the palm tree lined drive approaches from the east. When first built, the Van Wezel was affectionately nicknamed “the purple cow” by the locals.
