Description
The Henry B Plant Museum by HH Photography of Florida.
Located in the south wing of Plant Hall on what is now The University of Tampa campus, is the Henry B. Plant museum. The museum houses various historical records, artifacts and exhibits from the once vibrant Tampa Bay Hotel, built in 1888 by railroad magnate, Henry B. Plant.
The Victorian gingerbread architecture of the hotel was used to cater to the rich Victorians of the era ... in other words, what we would today call "the rich and famous." When it opened in 1891, it was a 511 room resort hotel, visited by celebrities, presidents, princes, sports heroes, and was the first hotel in Florida to have an elevator (which is still functional and in use today) The rooms in the hotel were also the first in Florida to have electric lights and telephones in each room.
In addition to the wonderful architecture, one of the most interesting parts of the beautiful building are the Moorish minarets, cupolas and domes that rise from the rooftop of the old hotel. These beautiful minarets have become the unofficial symbol of Tampa and are a delightful sight in the downtown area. In 1972, the entire building was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark. If ever in the Tampa area be sure to check out the museum. It's worth the trip. Also available in black and white.
