Description
Prayer Of An American Cowboy by HH Photography of Florida.
This prayer, titled A Cowboy’s Prayer, was written by the iconic western poet laureate, Charles “Badger” Clark, and was first published in 1906. Although born in Iowa, Badger spent much of his life in South Dakota, moving to the Black Hills in 1925 where he continued to write poetry for the rest of his life.
Cowboys are a special breed unto their own. A long held American West staple, cowboys, their horses and all that goes with being a cowboy have been seared into American history and heritage. Cowboys exist in almost every state in the country but are notably present in the west and southwest. A cowboy’s life usually entails herding and roping cattle, going on cattle drives, perhaps working on a ranch, riding a bull or bucking bronco in a rodeo and adopting a western philosophy and way of living.
You can always spot a cowboy by how he’s dressed. All cowboys have a western hat … maybe a Stetson, are usually wearing a plaid, long-sleeved shirt or something in denim, faded blue jeans, high-heeled cowboy boots, sometimes with spurs or steel-tipped toes and often wearing a kerchief around their neck.
The poem is written on brown toned, textured parchment with the words written in black type. A faded pair of cowboy boots can be seen in the background.
This poem and image are dedicated to cowboys everywhere.
