Mottled Duck In BW by HH Photography of Florida

There are two distinct species of Mottled Duck - Anas fulvigula and Anas fulvigula fulvigula – each living in two separate areas of the country. The species shown here, a permanent resident of Florida, is Anas fulvigula fulvigula and is found exclusively in the central and southern portions of the peninsula. This particular Mottled Duck also goes by the name of Florida mallard or Florida duck. Because of interbreeding with the Mallard and loss of habitat due to the draining of wetlands and to urban develop- ment, it is feared the Mottled Florida duck may one day become extinct. I caught this one standing between the roots of a ficus tree and presented her/him here in black and white.
