The Boca Grande Entrance Rear Range Lighthouse is one of two lighthouses located within Gasparilla Island State Park. It was originally built in 1881 and served as the Delaware Breakwater Rear Range Light until it was discontinued in 1918, disassembled in 1921 and shipped to Miami via rail. It was reassembled in 1927 in its present location on Gasparilla Island on Florida's west coast and rechristened Boca Grande Entrance Rear Range Lighthouse. The lighthouse became operational in 1932.
Boca Grande Entrance Rear Range Light worked in conjunction with a flashing light atop a front range steel structure located offshore. When a captain of a ship positioned his vessel so that the light from the rear range was directly above the flashing light of the front range, he knew he was in the middle of the shipping channel. He could then continue north in the channel, until he reached a series of towers that marked the channel leading east to the safe anchorage at Port Boca Grande.
In 2004, after public appeals and outcry, plans to discontinue the light were overturned and the lighthouse remains operational to the present day. Although no longer a range light, the tower's white light is alternately on for three seconds and off for three seconds, continuing to guide vessels safely through Boca Grande Channel into the sheltered safety of Charlotte Harbor.
