The New Colossus was penned in 1883 by American poet, Emma Lazarus. The poem was written to help raise money for construction of the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal base. Although the statue was not originally sculpted to be a symbol of immigration, it quickly became so as ships carrying thousands of immigrants from abroad sailed past the Lady with her torch held high, lighting the way for people on their way to Ellis Island and a better life. Emma Lazarus’ poem cemented Lady Liberty as the official greeter and a beacon of light to many who seek refuge in the United States. Her words have been cast in bronze and mounted inside the pedestal’s lower level.
