Description
Douglas Dam And Reservoir 2 by HH Photography of Florida.
Located on the French Broad River in Sevier County, Tennessee, the Douglas Dam is seen looking through the trees from a vantage point beside the river. If you look closely, you can see a fisherman in a boat at the base of the dam.
In addition to providing hydroelectric power to the region, the dam is also used for flood control and to maintain an 8’ depth in the channel during periods of drought for barges using this inland waterway. The reservoir provides drinking water for many local residents and Douglas Lake is an important and often used recreational destination for locals and tourists alike. Fishing, boating, camping, picnicing, water skiing, swimming and hiking are a few of the leisure activities enjoyed by many who visit.
Construction of Douglas Dam began in 1941 under the direction of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, to help generate emergency power for the war machine of WWII. It is currently operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority.
