Description
Black Skimmer Skimming by HH Photography of Florida
A Black Skimmer (Rynchops niger) seen skimming the beach at sunset with it’s lower mandible (which is elongated and longer than the upper) in the shallow water trying to pick up a tasty crustacean or small fish for dinner. The Black Skimmer is an interesting bird to watch when they’re feeding as they glide effortlessly across the water with their beak skimming the surface. They’re often seen in large groups resting on the beach or on sandbars along the coast. Photographed on the Florida Gulf coast.
