Description
Anatomy Of A Lotus by HH Photography of Florida.
Who knew? Believe it or not, these are the reproductive organs of the beautiful Sacred Lotus Blossom (Nelumbo nucifera.) Called the carpellary receptacle, the flat topped structure at the top of the stalk has tiny bumps that are the female stigmas each containing an ovule. These will be fertilized by the feathery looking appendages at the base of the receptacle which contain the male anthers. After fertilization, these will fall away and the tiny bumps will develop into seeds. As the seeds grow, the carpellary receptacle will begin to tilt and the seeds are then able to fall out into the water and new lotus plants will soon thrive. See the photograph titled Gone To Seed for a look at the matured seed head. All parts of the lotus are edible and rich in nutrients .. the flower, roots, seeds and leaves. Digital manipulation of my original photograph with various filters and textures applied for an artistic presentation.
