Often kept as a household pet by many children across the land (and perhaps some adults) this Red-eared Slider (Tracemys scripta elegans) was photographed near one of the many ponds in west central Florida. This little turtle holds the distinction of being the most favorite pet turtle in the U.S. and throughout other parts of the world. It gets it's name from the streak of red above it's ears and because of it's ability to quickly slide off of logs or the banks of ponds or rivers. Unfortunately, because of pet releases into the wild, it is considered an invasive species in many areas of the country.
