Description
A Speckled Trout Breakfast / Original fine art photography by HH Photography of Florida.
This Osprey Dad has caught a Speckled Trout for his breakfast this morning. This beautiful creature is part of a family I have closely observed and photographed for the past 3+ years. His gorgeous mate and he have raised 3 sets of *kids* as I looked on daily.
Early each year, I wait with great anticipation to get my first peek at the new babies. The nest is in a very tall, old pine snag so I can't see them until the babies are pretty big. Dad has fetched food for his mate during the entire time she's been sitting on the nest and after the babies are born, his fetching becomes more and more frequent. When he returns with a fish, he always sits in a nearby tree and eats a third of the fish and then flies to the nest and drops the remainder for Mom. She eats a little and then feeds the squawking youngsters. It's a sight that's repeated over and over during each day.
After the kids get to the fledgling state, Flying 101 begins. First, much wing-flapping occurs...this goes on for days and then hovering over the nest lasts for a week or more and then it's time for that first flight. That's as an exciting event for me to witness as it is for the babies and the parents.
After they get the flying down pat, then it's time to learn how to fish. This *feeding yourself* process takes approximately another 3 weeks. Then Mom & Dad pack the bags for the babies and tell them..."Time to go, babies. Have a nice life." I don't know exactly how the parents urge the kids to move on but I've noticed that the parents disappear for a couple of weeks when they think the kids are old and educated enough to be on their own. I believe this is what encourages the babies to go out into the world and establish their own territory and find mates.
This mated pair has had a total of 7 babies since I've been watching them....2 the first year, 2 the second year - a male and a female, and 3 this past year - 2 females and a male. I feel like part of their family now and look forward to January when they will once again mate and begin the entire process anew.
