Description
USCGC Blackthorn Memorial by HH Photography of Florida.
On the evening of January 28, 1980, the 180’ USCGC Blackthorn collided with the 605’ oil tanker Capricorn in the shipping channel of Tampa Bay ... a channel that leads out to the Gulf of Mexico. Blackthorn had been in drydock in Tampa where it had received a major overhaul and was heading out to sea for a return to her home base in Galveston, Texas, when the accident occurred. Of the 50 crewmen aboard, 27 survived the incident ... 23 drowned when the Blackthorn capsized. To commemorate the Coast Guard ship and her crew, this memorial was erected and sits in Blackthorn Park, located along the I-275 corridor not far from where the accident happened.
