Description
Ficus Microcarpa by HH Photography of Florida.
Ficus Microcarpa, aka Chinese Banyan, is a banyan tree native to Southeast Asia and ranging from India to Borneo, Australia, Taiwan and New Caledonia. In this photo, you can see the incredible root structure of this ornamental which is often used for indoor bonsai gardening. In the wild, it grows to heights of 50-60 feet with roots that spread out from a central trunk and that can cover a widespread area. The tree produces a small fig which are eaten by birds who then deposit seeds here and there in their droppings, further propagating the ficus tree. In the Florida landscape, it is considered to be highly invasive, growing into a variety of concrete structures ... buildings, sidewalks and under roadways. The root structure is simply amazing. Photographed on the Florida Gulf coast.
